We are encased in fog and it's 55 degrees. As we cross over the mountain into Annapolis Royal the sun breaks out. The town, home to 450 people, is a charming small fishing village. We stroll St. George Street, walk on the wharf and buy yukon golds at a small farmer's market that is in town on Wednesday mornings.
The 18th century Fort St. Anne is an expansive fortification with sweeping lawns overlooking the Annapolis River. It has been won and lost by both the French and the English. The history is well documented through signage placed throughout the site and the officer's garrison houses a tapestry made by the locals documenting the history of the fort. It's a very pleasant stop.
We sit on the deck of the Old Town Pub, enjoying a good lunch and a conversation with a young honeymooning couple who are bicyling around Nova Scotia for six weeks dragging their tents and clothing. They have been at it for a month and are still talking and smiling!
We're hoping the fog has lifted at The Cove...as we reach the crest of the mountain we are greeted with sunshine and a wonderful view of the Bay of Fundy. Pull out the chaise lounge and spend two delightful hours in the sun reading.
Grilled lamb chops, zucchini and the yukon golds...the Olympics complete a very pleasant day.
